The tribal arts of Africa, with their immense vigour, their superb geometrical forms and their obsessive power, have in relatively few years taken a place among the world's great art forms. Their influence on the modern movement in painting and in sculpture has been incalculable. Yet appreciation of this art is so much less than complete without an understanding of the cultures which produced it.
