Photographs by Arnold Eagle document the lives of religious Jews and their children during the 1930s, depicting bearded scholars, boys in cheder , mothers lighting the shabbat candles, and other scenes. Hertzberg describes the era, and how many of the children shown later turned away from Judaism.
